A report indicates that Southampton are moving Kelvin Davis into a more involved role with the first-team and Mark Hughes.

Mark Hughes remains in a precarious position with Southampton after yet another defeat, this time away at Fulham on Saturday.

Saints fans watched as their team threw away a 1-0 lead for the fourth time this season in five attempts and calls for a change have only gotten louder.

And according to TalkSPORT, that change could be on its way – although it isn’t what fans would have expected.

TalkSPORT claim that former goalkeeper and current senior coach Kelvin Davis has been asked to take on a more involved role with the first-team by chairman Ralph Krueger.

This will almost certainly be at odds with Hughes for as the report states, he has a close-knit backroom staff and having someone forced into it is unlikely to go down well.

Which begs the question: why are they doing it?

Southampton aren’t getting a look at Davis as a potential coach because Hughes is still very much in charge, but you’re also hampering the Welshman with someone who undermines his position.

Instead, it comes across as the Saints board not knowing what they really want; Southampton clearly want something to change but they’re hesitant to go all-out on either Davies or sacking Hughes.

If they really want change, and they certainly should do, then they need to find a way to get it from Hughes or bring in someone new to oversee it.

Anything in between just feels like a weak decision.
