Richarlison has set himself some very lofty goals for himself and Marco Silva’s side after joining Everton from Watford this summer.
Richarlison gave an interview to Brazil’s UOL this week and his words were eye-catching for a 21-year-old with experience as limited as his.
But the Brazilian believes he’s got a handle on the Premier League after his debut season – something that his three goals in two games for Everton back up.
“I feel more prepared, I already know the rhythm and style of the Premier League, which helps me on the way to the achievements,” he told UOL.
That’s not the part of the interview that really grabs your attention, however, but rather what he says next…
“I want to be the top scorer of the league, take Everton back to the Champions League and reach the Brazilian national team.”
Now, if he keeps performing like he has for Everton, he shouldn’t have to wait too long before he gets a go in a Brazil shirt; the first two are far loftier targets.
No matter how ridiculous you may feel those goals are – and some will certainly find them pretty ridiculous – the fact that he’s moved to Everton and sees those as attainable is a huge compliment to the blue side of Liverpool.
Richarlison is young, evidently very ambitious, and happy to speak out about wanting to reach the top soon – that’s something that would have stuck out like a sore thumb a few months ago.
To go from the soul-sucking mediocrity that emanated from Goodison Park last season to a place where a 21-year-old can feel wildly optimistic is fantastic work by everyone at the club this summer.
It may only be a few words from a new signing but it’s another sign of a real turnaround at Everton – and one that should be exciting.
