Reports in the summer linked Newcastle United with a move for Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico.
The Mirror claim that Rafa Benitez has handed a list of targets to managing director Lee Charnley, with an attacking left back high on the agenda.
With that in mind, it surely makes a lot of sense for Newcastle United to go back in for Nicolas Tagliafico after reportedly being priced out of a move in the summer.
The Argentine was said to have a £8million price tag when the Magpies enquired in the summer, as reported by the Chronicle, but that was deemed too high a price.
Tagliafico only joined Ajax at the start of the year and has been a revelation – enough so that the 26-year-old hasn’t just forced his way to a consistent place in the Argentinian national team but has even captained it.
His price may have gone up since the summer but things have changed since then.
First, it was reported that Mike Ashley would be okay with finally breaking their 13-year-old transfer record in January by the Chronicle.
But recent talk that Ashley is ready to sell the club and wants to do so before January would suggest that there might finally be decent money to spend in the transfer window, regardless of Ashley’s initial intentions.
And Tagliafico is certainly a good enough player that their interest should survive any investment – they’re unlikely to find a more accomplished player for a position they desperately want to strengthen as soon as possible.
Newcastle could find that the problem holding them back in the summer is gone in January, so must reignite their interest in the Ajax defender.
