Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has praised new manager Jose Mourinho’s ‘quality’ summer signings.

Paul Scholes has claimed that the ‘quality signings’ made by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho are already starting to pay dividends for his former club.

United legend Scholes – who made over 700 appearances for the Red Devils during his playing days – believes Mourinho has purchased players who are ‘ready made for the Premier League’, and can lead United to title-glory this season.

Despite signing only four senior players in the summer transfer window, United have been widely praised for their transfer activity, and Scholes believes it is this quality over quantity mentality that is going to benefit United over the coming seasons.

“The quality of the players he [Mourinho] has brought in, that’s the biggest difference” Scholes told Sky Sports News HQ.

“The previous managers [David Moyes and Louis van Gaal] took a risk by playing some players that could have worked but probably didn’t work as well as they should have done.”

“But he [Mourinho] brought in ready-made players. That was what was needed, ready-made players for the Premier League.”

Scholes has previously been extremely critical of United since former manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, with the Salford born midfielder repeatedly questioning both the club’s playing style and tactics – as well as activities in the transfer market.

Now though, with United having spent a reported £140 million on Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly – as well as signing talisman Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimović on a free transfer – Scholes thinks the club has done perfect business.

“United have always had that type of player with a presence and that arrogance where they expect to win.”

“Ibrahimović, wherever he has been, has won the league. Pogba, with Juventus, the last three years he’s been close to winning the Champions League and I think they won the league title every year.”

“That winning mentality, like I say, Mourinho couldn’t afford to take that risk. These players are not a risk, they are winners.”

Scholes also highlighted the importance of Zlatan Ibrahimović’s signing to young forward Marcus Rashford – one of the breakthrough stars of last year’s Premier League campaign.

“Ibra is great for young players, especially for someone like Rashford. Marcus will have a massive role to play this season and to have someone to look up to like that and teach him how to play the game properly.”
