Schar enjoyed a wonderful first season at Newcastle and he has just continued to impress since.
Schar scored for Switzerland against the Republic of Ireland last night, as they picked up a 1-1 draw in Euro 2020 qualifying.
The Newcastle defender finished neatly inside the box, and it was another example of his calmness in front of goal.
Schar has a happy knack of hitting the back of the net, and he has already opened his goalscoring account in the Premier League this season too.
It is with his defending that the Magpies man really makes his name though.
Schar is robust in the air, strong in the tackle, and also comfortable in possession.
He possesses just about every quality required of a modern day central defender, and at 27 he still has his best years ahead of him.
In the current market Schar is easily worth double what AC Milan were preparing to pay for him, and the Italian side’s valuation of Schar is looking more and more of an insult as the weeks go on.
Newcastle’s main task now is ensuring that Schar stays at St. James’ Park for the foreseeable future.
The former Deportivo man is sure to be putting himself on the radar of some of Europe’s elite through his showings, both at domestic and international level.
Newcastle have had a habit of selling their best players in recent years, once sizeable bids have come in.
But if they are to offload Schar then Newcastle fans can, at least, rest assured that they will get more money for him than AC Milan were prepared to pay last summer.
