The Italian defender is exactly the type of player Everton should be targeting.
Toffees boss Ronald Koeman has already been heavily active in the transfer market this summer, spending just under £50 million on Davy Klaassen and Jordan Pickford, but the Dutchman will still be keen to bolster his squad even further still.
One particular area of the Everton squad that needs addressing is the central defensive department, with the likes of Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka entering the twilight of their careers.
The addition of a young, established centre-back will surely feature highly on Koeman’s agenda this summer, and with this in mind, the Blues should consider making an ambitious move for AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli.
Romagnoli in action for Italy
The 22-year-old Italian is one of the finest, most highly sought-after centre-backs on the continent, and he would be an outstanding acquisition for the Toffees, should they manage to bring him to Goodison Park.
The Italy international moved to the San Siro from Roma in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be in the region of £21.6 million, and has since gone on to showcase his talents on a consistent basis, making 69 appearances for the Rossoneri.
Romagnoli is cool and composed when in possession of the football, and has excellent ball dispersion skills. Standing at 6ft 2in, he is also commanding in the air, which will obviously be important when making the transition from Serie A to the Premier League.
One potential concern would be whether the young Italian would be able to handle the physicality of England’s top flight, but that would be something that is diligently assessed by the Everton scouting and management team, ahead of any kind of potential move for the player.
He does still have three years remaining on his current deal with Milan, so he will certainly not come cheap, but with the Toffees’ new-found financial power, following Farhad Moshiri’s partial takeover in February, they should have no problem in producing an offer that would tempt the Italian giants into selling.
