AC Milan are reportedly now rushing to sign star attacker Rafael Leao to a new contract, with the rumoured Tottenham target starring for Portugal last night at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serie A giants are speeding up the process of Leao’s new contract following a string of good performances for Portugal in Qatar, with the winger scoring one of the goals of the tournament last night in a 6-1 thrashing against Switzerland.
Whilst the report states that talks will officially start between Milan sporting director Paolo Maldini and Leao’s representatives after the World Cup, the Rossoneri are sweating over how long the winger will now spend in the Middle East with Portugal now looking like favourites to go all the way in the World Cup.
And with CalcioMercatoWeb has recently reporting that Tottenham are interested in Leao, Milan will not want to waste a single second in getting the 23-year-old forward tied down to a new long-term contract, especially with the attacker impressing for Portugal.

Indeed, Leao’s stock has raised considerably since starring in Qatar this winter, with the winger bagging two goals for Portugal. And for Tottenham, Milan accelerating plans to hand the forward a new contract is the last thing Antonio Conte wanted to hear.
Whilst attack is hardly the last thing Tottenham need in the January window, Leao is a talent who is proving to be too good to pass up on. And Milan signing the youngster to a fresh deal will be a killer blow for the likes of Spurs in the race to sign the attacker.
Leao signing new Milan contract would be quite the plot twist

Leao’s form for club and country this season has strongly suggested that the winger is ready for a move away from Milan in 2023. However, the Rossoneri actually being close to signing the attacker to a new deal is something few would have suspected heading into January.
After all, Leao has been incredible this year and has been one of Portugal’s most dangerous weapons off the bench. And the forward signing a new deal with Milan will catch many by surprise despite how sensible the decision is in hindsight.
