AC Milan director Frederic Massara has said contract talks are on between the Rossoneri and Rafael Leao, who Liverpool and Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing.

Speaking to the press via Fabrizio Romano, the former AS Roma official revealed that the Serie A giants are in discussions with the Portuguese international to renew his contract, with transfer interest mounting for Leao ahead of the summer transfer window.

CalcioMercatoWeb have recently reported that Leao is a target for Liverpool, whilst according to CalcioMercato, Tottenham are also big fans of the 23-year-old winger, who is currently set to leave Milan at the end of this season to challenge himself somewhere else.

Indeed, Leao’s current contract with Milan includes a buyout clause worth £130m, and with clubs now willing to pay such an astronomical fee to sign the winger, Massara’s comments that talks over a new deal are now underway could be a crushing blow for Liverpool and Tottenham.

As we know, both clubs are interested in Leao, and Milan reopening talks to sign the winger down to a new contract will be a major blow for the Premier League duo, who could now miss out on one of the most exciting attackers in all of Europe.

Milan and Leao’s team might be in talks over a new contract, but that still doesn’t mean that a deal will be agreed on between the two parties, with an agreement still something that feels unlikely given how intense transfer interest has been in the 23-year-old in recent months.

Leao was key to Milan’s title win last season and continues to impress for the Rossoneri both domestically and in Europe, and although the forward would be wise to remain at the San Siro, it still feels unlikely that the winger would put pen to paper on a new contract with the Italian giants, especially amid Premier League interest.
