Everton are reportedly chasing the Sampdoria midfielder as they rebuild their squad for next season, but will it be at the expense of Davies?

A report from Calciomercaito on Tuesday suggested that Everton are considering a £22 million move for Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira.

The Uruguayan is also linked with Napoli, but Everton could act quickly to secure a player who has received a lot of plaudits in Italy this year.

At 22, Torreira is clearly one for the future as well as the present, and any move would be out of hope that he can be an integral part of Everton’s midfield for years to come. Yet that may be at the expense of a current young talent.

Tom Davies broke into the Toffees’ first-team in the 16/17 season, starting 18 times and then improving on that with 20 in the last campaign.

He has not completely nailed a place down – although that will always be difficult at just 19 – and could be threatened by a young player like Torreira arriving with much more experience and proven quality.

It is difficult to know exactly how Everton will line up next season given they have not appointed a manager yet, but it seems sensible to assume that Torreira and Gueye would take up two regular places in midfield if the former did arrive at Goodison Park.

The returning Gylfi Sigurdsson will be hopeful of a more regular central role in the side, too, and it is difficult to see where exactly Davies gets the necessary time to develop; especially when Gueye and Torreira would not be going away anytime soon.

A loan move would make perfect sense for Davies, allowing him to show his abilities consistently and continue his progression into what looks like a very fine footballer. A Premier League team would be perfect, of course, but a Championship side would not be a poor decision, either.

Wherever he gets the minutes, the Everton youngster will sorely need them regularly soon.
