Liverpool should only gamble on Harry Wilson if more is on the way

Wilson is set to be given a chance to impress this summer after securing a new contract – but where does that put Xherdan Shaqiri in their plans?

Harry Wilson of Liverpool celebrates scoring his second goal during the Pre-season friendly between Chester FC and Liverpool on July 7, 2018 in Chester, United Kingdom.

Harry Wilson is reportedly set for a new contract with Liverpool, as well as being handed the chance to secure a spot in Jurgen Klopp’s first team for next season, according to the Liverpool Echo.

That’s huge for the 21-year-old, who must have imagined he was set for another loan deal as his Liverpool career faded away – especially with the likes of Celtic supposedly interested.

But, instead, he’ll get his shot at the first team, asking another question: where does that put the Reds’ reported interest in Xherdan Shaqiri?

Should Wilson establish a place in Liverpool’s squad, there really wouldn’t be any need or room for Shaqiri as the two of them would fill the same role.

Wilson offers a cheaper, settled, longer-term investment to Shaqiri but while that’s desirable, he simply doesn’t offer the same kind of quality – not yet, at least.

And so, if that’s the route Liverpool move down, they must secure another attacking signing to go along with Wilson, although in a different role.

Shaqiri would come with some guarantee and perhaps be enough to see Liverpool through to January on his own but Wilson can’t be trusted to do it on his own.

Perhaps that could involve the revival of a move for Nabil Fekir, or perhaps a centre-forward could be targeted – whatever it would be, they can’t put hope in Wilson having a transformative impact.
