The Newcastle United midfielder believes the weekend’s victory can have a great effect on the whole club.

Newcastle United finally got their first win of the season at the weekend with a 1-0 win over Watford at St James’ Park.

Ayoze Perez grabbed the goal in the 65th minute that ended a run of 10 games without a win and lifted Rafa Benitez’s side out of the relegation zone.

While it won’t have completely eased all fears of relegation come the end of the season, it does represent a belated move onto the right track for Newcastle.

Midfielder Ki Sung-yeung believes that is absolutely vital for the club and that it should finally give them the ability to express themselves more.

“It is all about confidence now,” Ki told the Chronicle.

“We have won the first game and before that we had a lot of pressure on us. Now we have a little bit more freedom to play.”

The pressure had certainly built on Newcastle and Benitez, something that had contributed greatly to a toxic atmosphere at the club when coupled with the difficult situation with Mike Ashley.

After a rough start to the season, Ki admits that he sympathises with the fans.

“I feel sorry for the fans because they always give us great support during difficult times,” he said. “This atmosphere is amazing but I always appreciate fans.

“Hopefully this win pleases the fans and we can get more and more wins at St James’ Park.”

It is amazing what a win can do for the atmosphere at a club – both in the stands and on the pitch.

There’s no denying that Newcastle faced a very tough fixture list to start the season but with more winnable games on the horizon, Ki is right that the opportunity is there to fix some of the problems dogging the club.

The freedom the win can bring, as well as the hope it gives the fans, means the defeat of Watford was far more valuable than just three points.
