The Brazilian goalkeeper is set to start in both the Premier League and Champions League, leaving Simon Mignolet benched.
Jurgen Klopp has decided to use Alisson as his first-choice goalkeeper in both of Liverpool’s major competitions this season in a departure from last season’s practice, according to a report in the Telegraph.
Last year saw Klopp switch between Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet, with the former starting in the Champions League and the latter in the Premier League, but the Liverpool boss has seemingly changed his mind on the benefits of that.
It’s a system that’s throughout England and Europe, with elite clubs usually having a decent enough backup keeper to make it viable.
Klopp originally abandoned that way of doing things last January when, after Mignolet had spoken publicly of his lack of faith in the switching, the Germain began using Karius in every game.
There will have been a slight question over the first half of this season and whether Klopp would go back to the practice and his decision not to could be down to a few things.
It’s possible he simply didn’t like the system last season and feels more comfortable with his first choice playing every game, while it could be down to depleting trust in Mignolet – something seemingly lost last season when he relegated him to the bench for the second half of the season.
Another possibility is that Mignoley isn’t in Klopp’s good books right now; Mignolet spoke publicly about his dissatisfaction with Karius being loaned out when he wasn’t allowed to be.
Klopp answered this by saying that “In general discussing your individual problems in public does not make too much sense” and “it is always better to talk to me directly about it than newspapers”.
Either way, it certainly looks like Mignolet has blown his chance at first-team football with Liverpool once and for all.
