The Newcastle United captain has just met with owner Mike Ashley after signing a new six-year contract with the club.

“Speaking honestly, and it might not be what everyone wants to hear, as a club I think it’s important everyone is together – especially when we’re right down at the bottom of the table,” Jamaal Lascelles told the Shields Gazette.

The Newcastle United captain is adamant that more positivity is needed at the club, having met with divisive owner Mike Ashley.

Lascelles has somewhat played his part in that after agreeing to a new six-year contract with Newcastle, but it’s safe to say that it will take a lot more to get everyone singing the same tune.

Large sections of Newcastle’s fans have long opposed Ashley’s methods of running the club and the poor form shown this season has brought it to the fore once again.

The Magpies are yet to win a game this season and sit on three points in 19th place – a result, according to some, of poor investment.

Lascelles, however, believes that putting a little more effort into a positive attitude would go a long way.

“If there are divides, I think it creates problems,” he said. “If everyone in Newcastle stopped the negativity and tried to form a unity, that would help.

“When there are problems going on around off the pitch, it does have an effect on you as players. It would help if everyone came together and put all that bad energy into positive energy, helping us get three points. That’s what everybody wants.”

It’s certainly a lot easier to say than do; the animosity between the parties involved has grown for years now and if there was a genuine possibility of settling differences for the good of the team, you’d have to ask why it hasn’t happened yet.

While Lascelles is certainly promoting a nice idea, we’re at a point where actions from either side are the only way to get Newcastle fully functional once again.
