Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson feels his teammate has massive potential after an excellent start to the season.
Jordan Henderson believes his Liverpool and England teammate Joe Gomez has the tools to ‘be as good as he wants to be’.
Gomez has had an excellent start to the Premier League season having found himself partnering Virgil van Dijk is defence after injuries to Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren.
He may have missed the World Cup squad through an injury of his own but his form so far has been good enough to earn him an instant recall, despite now playing as a recognised centre back for the first time in his Anfield career.
Now his captain believes he can kick on and impress even more.
“He’s already very good but he can be even better,” said Henderson, reports Sky Sports. “He’s still very young.
“He’s still improving, still learning and there’s no better place to do that than at Liverpool with the players that he’s got around him and the manager.
“I’m excited for him because I know how good he can be and he’s got the right mentality as well. He’s very mature for his age. His feet are firmly on the ground and he can be as good as he wants to be.”
It’s got to be great for any young player to hear, let alone your captain and international teammate.
Gomez has done brilliantly to refind his feet after suffering a terrible injury in his first season with Liverpool, one that led to him effectively losing two years of his career.
To rebound the way he has – and to still look every bit as good as everyone hoped he would – is a testament to his ability and mentality. There’s little doubt that Gomez could become a key player for both club and country.
