Tottenham Hotspur look set to secure the signing of Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, but Everton should make a late move for the midfielder.

The Mirror reported on Thursday that Tottenham Hotspur have ‘won the race’ for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.

In the same report, it’s said that Mauricio Pochettino sees the 22-year-old as perfect competition for Dele Alli, but is that a role that Grealish should be settling for?

There’s no doubt that Tottenham need the squad depth – or that Grealish would be ideal for the role from their point of view – the players themselves, however, might not be too keen on the arrangement.

Grealish is looking to make the step up from the Championship and, given his age, first-team football should surely be a priority for him. There was speculation that his other two options were Leicester City and West Ham United, but other deals at both clubs appear to have made a move for Grealish unlikely. That’s why, Tottenham, then, appear to be in pole position.

But what about Everton ? It was reported earlier in the month that new boss Marco Silva was interested in Jack Wilshere and Ruben Loftus-Cheek – two players who play a very similar role to Grealish – and with those deals looking a lot less likely, Grealish offers a sensible alternative.

Grealish would slot right into the role that they had hoped Wayne Rooney would fill a year ago. He is the perfect age for a team with a long-term plan like Everton, and would represent something of a marquee signing – at least someone to help build a midfield around.

Spurs may be an attractive club for Grealish, but Everton can offer him a starting role at a club on the up. The Toffees may just be able to turn his head.
