Liverpool pulled out of a deal for Nabil Fekir in the summer but recent events could get their attention back on the Frenchman.
It is no secret that Liverpool had the signing of Lyon’s Nabil Fekir all but sewn up when they pulled the plug last summer.
Huge doubts over the long-term health of his knee made a potential £60million investment far too risky; a position that is difficult to argue with when you consider his history of knee problems.
But now, nearly six months on, the potential is there for Liverpool to reconsider once again, especially in the wake of comments by Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.
Fekir signed a five-year contract back in the summer of 2015, meaning that he enters the last year of his deal next July and would be available for considerably less money than he was the last time Liverpool negotiated.
Interestingly, Aulas does not know what Fekir is planning to do going forward and there appears to be real potential for a change of agent for the Frenchman.
“For the moment, we haven’t really got into a real discussion, even though we met three weeks ago,” said Aulas, according to L’Equipe. “The sorting out of certain things regarding the question of his agent is underway.
“The aim is to have a clear and precise position from him between now and the end of the year.
“Jean-Pierre Bernes is still his agent, but he might not be between now and the end of his contract.”
A change of agent would suggest that Fekir has his eyes set on something major for his career and, while it may be an extension with Lyon, it does seem likely that he will be looking to move.
If that is the case, Liverpool must have an interest.
It was reported by French journalist Julien Laurens recently that the Reds are ‘still very much monitoring his situation’ and, if Fekir does become available for a reduced fee, the risk that put Liverpool off in the summer would be significantly lessened.
Liverpool’s plans may have changed last July but the story of Fekir to Anfield does not appear to be over just yet.
