Liverpool have been linked with a move for Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne by reports in Italy.

According to Rai Sport Live (16 October, 9:00am), Liverpool have an interest in signing Lorenzo Insigne from Napoli.

Any move for the Italian would be an expensive one, even if it surely would not come to the €180m that Napoli’s president claimed recently, and would be at the current level of a first-team player.

Insigne is, after all, a vital player for Napoli who has started the season with seven goals in ten games under Carlo Ancelotti, including a late winner against Liverpool in the Champions League.

That begs the question: why would Liverpool look to spend big money on a forward when their current three are so formidable?

The answer to that question could be that Sadio Mane remains the only one of the trio with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino to have not committed himself to a new long-term deal.

Sadio Mane of Liverpool runs with the ball during the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Manchester City at Anfield on October 07, 2018 in Liverpool, United Kingdom.

The Senegalese winger still has three years left on his current deal but was not so quick to renew as his strike partners.

So perhaps the interest in Insigne suggests the club is looking for insurance against Mane leaving the club. They would require an elite player to slot in on the left flank and prevent any halt in their progress under Jurgen Klopp, and Insigne does fit that bill very well.

Everyone involved with Liverpool would want Mane to renew his deal and stick around but, if he doesn’t, the Reds may have found a viable alternative.
