Any ambitions Wolves have should be set in a year’s time

Reports suggest that the board at Wolverhampton Wanderers have set a lofty target for their first season back in the Premier League.

The Mirror reported on Tuesday that the board at Wolverhampton Wanderers are targeting a sixth-place finish in the Premier League next season.

That’s very ambitious, considering the strength and dominance of the current ‘big six’ in England’s top flight.

Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal had those first six positions sewn up before last season began and, if we’re being completely honest, likely do so ahead of the next one, too.

A newly promoted club claiming that they’re the one who can break them up shows a lot of confidence, and why wouldn’t Wolves have that? They took the Championship by storm, playing attractive football with some very talented players.

The problem is that we’ve seen similar before; Wolves aren’t the first side to come up and make grand claims about how far they’ll go, nor are they the first to really impress in the Championship.

Teams like Queen’s Park Rangers and Cardiff City have claimed promotion and then promised to establish themselves in the Premier League with ambition and money, only to quickly find that the step up was far larger than it looked.

Reading, Newcastle United, and Leicester have all broken the 100 points barrier in the Championship, something that Wolves narrowly failed to do, but their impressive performances weren’t transferred to the elite level and all three struggled (at first, it should be said – Leicester looked almost certain to be relegated straight back down before their miraculous turnaround proved that you can make the step up if you figure out the league in time).

But that’s not to say for a second that Wolves can’t do it – they certainly can. They’re a very good side and one that everyone expects to compete well in the Premier League.

Expecting is different from knowing, however; we’re still guessing with this Wolves side and until they can prove it with a successful season, it’s best they don’t get ahead of themselves – it’s a mighty big step up.
