Stoke City fans on Twitter have provided a mixed response to signing James Chester, who recently left Aston Villa on a free transfer.

Chester was on loan at Stoke last season when he was in the final months of his contract at Villa Park, as they have now opted to bring him back on a permanent basis.

Stoke fans have already had a taste of what Chester brought to the table and it seems some weren’t too impressed with what he showcased.

It needs to be remembered that during Villa’s promotion season, Chester played through injury and put his body on the line for the club because there were no other centre-back options.

When new centre-backs were brought in, Chester was then sidelined for at least six months, so he perhaps needed his recent loan spell with Stoke to just get some sharpness back.

If his body can react well to the cluster of Championship games then Stoke will have a high-quality defender on their hands.

Despite some being underwhelmed by Chester’s signings, other Stoke fans believe his one-year deal and experience will be invaluable to a Michael O’Neil side that will be pushing for promotion in September.
