It was a pretty awful night for Liverpool’s Neco Williams on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old started for Wales against France in a pre-Euro 2020 friendly.
But Williams, who began his career at Liverpool, received a controversial first-half red card.
The youngster was given his marching orders for a ‘deliberate handball’ after blocking Karim Benzema’s goal-bound shot.
Thing is, Williams’s hand was inches from the ball and therefore it was a near-impossible task to get his hand out of the way.
Here’s what David Edwards said on his commentary on Sky Sports: “That is absolutely ridiculous. A penalty is bad enough but a red card as well when he’s a yard away…..I cannot think how the referee possibly thought that that deserves a red card.”
Appeal
The good news is that justice was sort of served because Benzema missed the resulting spot kick.
The bad news is that the Liverpool prospect watched on as his international colleagues suffered a 3-0 defeat anyway.
Wales interim boss Robert Page revealed via The Echo afterwards that the nation would be appealing the decision.
Williams was, of course, named in Page’s squad for the European Championships this summer and he’ll want a clean slate going into the competition.
