Don Hutchison is certain that Chelsea won’t be signing Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur this summer, labelling his colleagues as ‘absolutely nuts’ for entertaining the idea.
According to Sky Sports, the Stamford Bridge club are keen on signing the want-away Spurs hitman over the coming months.
Kane gave a revealing interview via Sky Sports last week in which he effectively confirmed his desire to leave Tottenham, amid intense speculation about an exit.
Eurosport reported last week that the Lilywhites’ chairman Daniel Levy would only sell for a figure close to £200 million.
But with Spurs and Chelsea being bitter London rivals, Hutchison claims that Levy would never strengthen their enemies by selling them the club’s prized asset, arguing that working under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City – who are also linked – would be much more attractive to Kane.
He told ESPN: “Are you guys absolutely nuts? Do you honestly think Daniel Levy’s going to sell Harry Kane to Chelsea? And do you think Harry Kane wants to go and sign for Chelsea?
“If you’re Harry Kane at 28, you want to go and play for Pep Guardiola don’t you? For sure. He’s playing catch up and should’ve probably went two or three years ago.”
Is Hutchison right? Well, he’s on the right track in saying that Levy wouldn’t want to sell to Chelsea.
But at the end of the day, money talks in football just like it does in every other business and Kane is, after all, an asset.
If Tottenham can make more money by selling Kane to Chelsea than other clubs, and the 27-year-old himself is keen, then Levy, for all the talk of his negotiation skills and determination to do right by the club, may not have a choice if the Blues give him an offer that he cannot refuse.
