Speaking on the UMM YouTube channel, Harry Kane has been discussing his partnership with Heung-Min Son.
Kane and Son have struck up one of the most deadly pairings the Premier League has ever seen, and while Kane is a world-class goalscorer, he’s also just as good at setting his teammates up these days.
However, despite his creativity, Kane says that he would still much rather score a goal himself than assist Son.
Kane prefers scoring
“You’d rather set up Son than score yourself?” Kane was asked.
“Absolutely not, absolutely not. I love setting up Son, especially when we’re winning games, but if I had to choose between a goal and an assist I’m choosing a goal all day,” Kane said.
“It’s something we’ve built up over time. We’ve known each other for seven or eight years, we’ve played a lot together and we train together. Over the past few years we’ve really understood each other’s game and I’ve been dropping a bit deeper and he’s making the runs behind and we’re really seeing the fruits of that.”
Striker’s mentality
That’s not surprising to hear at all.
As great as it is to receive plaudits for assists, strikers are judged on how often they put the ball in the back of the net.
Kane is absolutely brilliant at both aspects of the game, but there’s a certain buzz attached to scoring a goal that you don’t get with an assist.
It’s not shocking to hear that Kane would rather score. He’s a player obsessed with his stats, records and awards and with Alan Shearer and Jimmy Greaves’ records now within sight, every goal is like gold dust for the Spurs striker.
This is the mentality every elite striker needs to have, and Kane certainly fits into that category.
