Ally McCoist has criticised Rangers star Kemar Roofe during Celtic’s win at Ibrox as the striker was continually caught offside by the Hoops defence on Sunday. One example late on, left McCoist exasperated at the Rangers star.
Celtic have gone six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after an Old Firm win over the Gers – in which the Hoops largely dominated. Aaron Ramsey put Rangers ahead, but Celtic came roaring back.
Tom Rogic and Cameron Carter-Vickers got the goals as Celtic held on to win 2-1. Rangers did miss striker Alfredo Morelos, who picked up a knock while on international duty with Colombia. Kemar Roofe started up front.
The ex-Leeds striker looked somewhat sluggish, his best chance coming in the second half – getting the right side of Carl Starfelt but volleying over. He was offside in the 94th minute, and McCoist hammered the Rangers star.
“I’ve got no idea why he is offside. Absolutely no idea. You just don’t need to do it, look along the line. Absolutely no idea,” McCoist said during his role as co-commentator on Sky Sports, during Sunday afternoon’s title showdown.
McCoist on Roofe: Rangers star looked rusty, Gers missed Morelos
Roofe joined Rangers for £3.5million (Times) and while the stats suggest he has repaid some of that figure – 30 goals in 67 appearances – he is yet to fully convince the Rangers support. Indeed, Morelos is easily first choice.
What Morelos does, is occupy both centre-backs. It leaves gaps for Ryan Kent, Ramsey and Joe Aribo to exploit. But the Celtic duo dominated Roofe, allowing the Celtic defence to also swallow Rangers midfielders.
Roofe is capable of better, but injuries and a lack of momentum this season has hampered his progress. Perhaps no excuse, though, for the offside given against him in injury time.
