Tim Sherwood hailed Thomas Partey’s ‘absolutely magnificent’ goal during Arsenal’s 3-1 win in the north London derby on Saturday.

The former Premier League winner also added that Arsenal were the ‘better team’ yesterday, as he commented on the players ‘enjoying’ the reception they got from their fans after the full-time whistle.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham have a strong record on home soil during this hotly-contested derby and Saturday’s meeting was no different.

Arsenal fans have probably wanted Partey to add more goals to his game because he is a very good striker of the ball.

But given that it’s Granit Xhaka who is the one motoring forward between the defensive two, then Partey isn’t afforded that licence.

Either way, when handed that chance against Spurs, his first-time strike from the edge of the box was just too hot to handle for Hugo Lloris in between the sticks and Sherwood praised the Gunners, as he told Premier League Productions (01/10/22 at 2:25 pm).

“Look at how deep the Tottenham players are, it’s all so passive,” said Sherwood. “It’s really interesting to see Son’s position there.

“He is doubling up on Saka and gets too deep. They circulate the ball, it goes straight through to Partey and he finishes it absolutely magnificent.

“They were the better team from start to finish and had all the control of the football match. They wore Tottenham’s legs down and the team are enjoying the fans’ response here and it’s thoroughly deserved.”

GOALS FROM MIDFIELD

Arsenal are doing pretty well to spread the goals this season and it’s a good sign going forward for Mikel Arteta.

Whilst Gabriel Jesus is the main man up top, and he got on the scoresheet again, it does ease the pressure on the summer signing because of the goal threat around him.

Two of the north London derby goalscorers – Partey and Xhaka – as the games progress, are becoming even more important for the team.

It will be interesting, come the January transfer window, if they knock on the door for another defensive-minded midfielder because another one is needed.
