Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Fabian Schar and labelled his goal as ‘absolutely magnificent’ after Newcastle United beat Nottingham Forest 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park.

The legendary striker added that Newcastle United were initially ‘sluggish’ in the game, before Schar’s long-range ‘brilliance’ opened the scoring.

That’s when Newcastle started to get their engine going and started to entertain their fans on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.

A fit and firing Callum Wilson made sure of the points against the newly-promoted side with a brilliant darting run and finish, as Eddie Howe’s side put maximum points on the table.

Three points for Newcastle equals a pretty delighted Shearer, who praised 2018 Rafa Benitez signing Schar and his moment of magic, as he told BBC Sport.

“What a strike it was,” said Shearer. “It was looking like a frustrating afternoon for Newcastle because they played ever so well, up until the final third.

“Creating changes and a little bit sluggish in and around the six-yard box, until that piece of brilliance from Fabian Schar. The technique, the strike, was absolutely magnificent and once they got that first goal, it was just a matter of how many they would get.

“It deserved three points and a good afternoon for Newcastle.”

PERFECT START FOR NEWCASTLE

During the second half of last season, Howe’s side showed great signs that they were going to be a real threat this season and it’s proven to be the case.

Three points, and most importantly, a clean sheet for a team that is looking like a completely different animal this time around.

To think that the Toon Army faithful had to wait months and months for a win last season and now one has been put on the table straightaway proves that they might just do some serious damage this term.

Summer signing Sven Botman didn’t even start, with Dan Burn and Schar continuing their strong performances from the last campaign.

That’s some serious competition being built by Howe and fans will be pretty excited by it all.
