LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - JUNE 21: Jamie Carragher speaks with John Barnes for Sky Sports after the Premier League match between Everton FC and Liverpool FC at Goodison Park on June 21, 2020 in Liverpool, England. John Barnes has told TalkSport Breakfast (21/09/20 at 8:45 am) that Everton can ‘absolutely’ finish fifth or sixth in the Premier League this season.

The former Liverpool winger doesn’t think Carlo Ancelotti can push Everton towards a top-four finish, but he has backed them to pounce on the ‘inconsistencies’ of the teams around them.

It has been the perfect start for the Toffees, who have beaten Spurs and West Brom from their opening two matches, scoring six goals and securing one clean sheet.

Whilst it’s early days yet, Everton fans will love the fact that Barnes is backing them for a potential European finish.

“I don’t think there’s necessarily going to be a shake-up in the top four,” Barnes told TalkSport. “But the top-six, meaning fifth or sixth, I think Everton could look to push into that. Absolutely.

“If you look at the inconsistency of Tottenham [against Everton & Southampton] and even you look at Manchester United and the way they have started. Chelsea being inconsistent.

“I think they can do it [finish fifth or sixth].”

Getting back into Europe and potentially adding a trophy to their cabinet is the main aim for Ancelotti.

They are still in the League Cup after they dispatched League Two side Salford, as the club’s new signings have made a huge difference.

James Rodriguez has added some serious magic to the final third and it doesn’t even seem as though he is anywhere near his best yet. Whilst Allan has perhaps been their best player, along with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has four goals in two matches.
