Fabrizio Romano has told Sky Sports News that Liverpool signing Dayot Upamecano is ‘absolutely impossible’ this month.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with the RB Leipzig man over a number of transfer window now.

However, Liverpool’s chances of signing the 22-year-old in the near future have been entirely ruled out.

“Liverpool are looking for opportunities [to sign a CB] – if something arrives, they will be ready to sign a new player. But spending £60m/£70m on players like Upamecano is absolutely impossible in this window,” Romano said.

The news that Liverpool are looking for opportunities is an interesting one, as Jurgen Klopp has played down the possibility of a central defender coming.

Upamecano could have been a title clinching signing for Liverpool if they had pulled it off, but it seems that they simply do not have the budget to make any lavish additions at this stage.

Liverpool, instead, may have to carry on with their current squad – with Klopp’s options at the back extremely limited.

With Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk out injured it seems that Liverpool will be relying on inexperienced players like Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips for the rest of the season.
