Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has stated on Instagram that he is ‘absolutely gutted’ at having to undergo surgery without playing a single minute out on-loan at Italian side, Sampdoria.
The 26-year-old left Spurs in the summer and joined the Serie A side on-loan in order to get his career back on track, after his game time completely dried up under Antonio Conte.
But Winks hasn’t been able to take to the pitch for Sampdoria, which he described as a ‘persistent problem I had since the summer (which) has resulted in surgery’.
NO LUCK FOR WINKS
Ever since Mauricio Pochettino headed for the Tottenham exit door in 2019, Winks’ career, at the wrong time, has started to stagnate at an alarming rate.
At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he was a regular member of Gareth Southgate’s side, playing for Spurs, including in the Champions League.
But he just wasn’t able to take his game to the next level, which resulted in him constantly being benched by the likes of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and now Antonio Conte.

He moved to Italy in order to pick up his career, get some confidence back in his legs and put his name back on the map.
But that has since been ruined by injury and it wouldn’t be a surprise if his current loan deal at Sampdoria is cut short at some point.
It will be gutting for the player because he has shown that he has the talent to play on the big stage, he just now needs some luck to go his way.
