It was a mixed night for Liverpool star Mohamed Salah against Southampton on Saturday.
Yes, the Liverpool attacker set up Sadio Mane’s opener with a brilliant cross for the Senegal international to head home in the first half.
But Salah also fluffed more than a few opportunities to fatten the lead, with Jurgen Klopp’s side ultimately only winning 2-0.
The former Chelsea and Roma winger also could and should have squared to Mane earlier in the game but, instead of passing for his unmarked teammate to tap home, he shot himself and Fraser Forster denied him.
Even Liverpool boss Klopp was frustrated by his £34 million signing from 2017.
Stephen Warnock, during commentary on Optus Sports, revealed that Salah made his manager ‘absolutely furious’ over his lack of work ethic.
He said: “I’m just looking down here and Jurgen Klopp is absolutely furious with Mohamed Salah – his tracking back, his intensity. His standards [Klopp’s] never drop, do they?”
The three points is all that mattered for Liverpool, who boosted their Champions League qualification hopes.
Klopp’s side are now six points behind fourth-placed Leicester City but, crucially, the reigning Premier League champions have a game in hand over the Foxes.
The gap is potentially only three points with three games to play and with Brendan Rodgers’s side having Tottenham, Chelsea and Manchester United left, Liverpool may well sneak into that fourth and final Champions League spot.
