Gary Neville says Georginio Rutter was ‘absolutely furious’ with Archie Gray after his Leeds United teammate didn’t pass him the ball during his side’s EFL Cup defeat to Salford City on Tuesday night.

The moment happened five minutes before Salford opened the scoring through Matt Smith, with Archie Gray opting to shoot rather than pass the ball to Geroginio Rutter when the Leeds forward played a clever ball inside to the on-rushing midfielder.

Gray’s effort at the goal did test the goalkeeper because it went out for a corner, but not so long after, it was the League Two side wheeling away in celebration.

Salford co-owner Gary Neville was watching from the commentary box and he thinks that young Gray made the wrong call, as he told Sky Sports Football (29/08/23).

The Championship side did equalise in the second half, but the game went to penalties and, in the end, it was Neville celebrating from the stands.

It was deserved because Daniel Farke’s side weren’t clinical enough in front of goal, and in the end, it cost them, with Neville sharing his thoughts on Rutter and Gray.

“Rutter is absolutely furious with Gray,” said Nevile. “I think he has a right to be. He just pops it into there (midfield to the on-rushing Gray).

“I think Gray should play Rutter on goal. But he doesn’t.”

Focus on promotion

The main aim is to earn promotion back to the Premier League, so this EFL Cup defeat should be seen as a blessing in disguise.

Not only will Daniel Farke look at the positives, but he also probably can’t wait until the 2023 summer transfer window slams shut on Friday.

That way, he knows who is in and who is out because he has had to deal with a lot of rubbish ever since he took charge of the recently-relegated side.
