Well, Liverpool won’t be winning a trophy this season.

The Reds were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid on Wednesday night, with the Spanish giants securing a 0-0 draw at Anfield to move into the semi-final of the competition.

Really, the damage was done in the first leg as Liverpool lost 3-1 away to Real last week.

It was going to have to be a much-improved display last night and although quite a few of the Liverpool lads did play a lot better, it wasn’t enough.

One player who was particularly impressive was Nat Phillips.

The big centre-back struggled at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium nine days ago and was arguably a bit too loose on Vinicius Junior for both his goals.

But Phillips was a rock in Liverpool’s defence last night and James Milner singled him out for praise after the game.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Milner said: “I thought there were some outstanding performances. Nat Phillips again was absolutely fantastic at the back.”

Liverpool’s season is now all about finishing in the top four and if there’s a positive to be taken from being knocked out of the Champions League, it’s that it allows Jurgen Klopp’s side to focus on getting there next season.

As things stand, the Anfield side are sixth in the Premier League and two points behind fourth-placed West Ham United with seven matches left.
