Fabrizio Romano has debunked a rumour that Tottenham Hotspur loanee Gareth Bale is retiring from football.

Bale had a brilliant end to his season-long loan at Spurs and scored twice in their final-day win away to Leicester City as the North Londoners sealed a seventh-placed finish.

It has been reported that Tottenham have the option to keep Bale for a second year due to the fact that his Real Madrid career looks effectively over.

ABC in Spain have reported that the 31-year-old intends to terminate his contract at the Bernabeu this summer prior to hanging up his boots for good.

But reliable Italian journalist Romano has rubbished the claim.

He told his Here We Go podcast: “This is absolutely fake – fake news. Gareth Bale is not considering retiring. He wants to continue. He has a contract at Real Madrid. Bale is staying – staying in football I mean. Let’s see what happens.”

Bale himself dropped a pretty cryptic clue after the Leicester win this past weekend.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, the Wales international said he has already decided his future but refrained to specify in the belief that it would ’cause chaos’.

That sort of strengthened the suggestion that he may retire from football, because going back to Real or re-signing for Tottenham on loan wouldn’t really be that major – well, not enough to prompt the sort of carnage he hinted at in his post-match interview.
