In defence of the Hammers, they could not have predicted that summer signing Andre Ayew would be immediately sidelined with injury – but on opposite end of the spectrum, Andy Carroll’s fitness problems could have been seen coming a mile off.

Enner Valencia was sold to Everton on deadline day, which was no great loss, but the summer signings – Ayew aside- they did make, are yet to make any sort of impact.

These include Argentine loan forward Jonathan Calleri, who looks out of his depth in the Premier League, and fellow loanee Simone Zaza, who also does not seem to be good enough.

Ashley Fletcher is merely a prospect at this point, but add it all up, and it is little wonder the Hammers are floundering in the bottom half of the table with only two wins.

During the summer West Ham chased big names like Michy Batshuayi, Alexandre Lacazette, and Carlos Bacca, without success.

Setting their sights high was fine, and while there has been bad luck over Ayew, the results from the collection of players they currently have makes for an embarrassing record at this stage of the season.
