‘Absolutely embarrassing’: Some Liverpool fans spot what ref did after giving penalty

Some Liverpool fans are furious with referee Chris Kavanagh, for two reasons.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lost their first Merseyside derby for 11 years last night as Everton picked up a 2-0 win at Anfield.

As a result, the reigning Premier League champions are sixth in the table and 16 points behind high-flying Manchester City, who also have a game in hand.

As with many Liverpool games these days, there was more than a hint of controversy.

Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead after three minutes but Gylfi Sigurdsson put the result beyond doubt late on from the penalty spot, after Kavanagh awarded the visitors a penalty when Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to trip over Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was in a sitting position and had his back to the attacker.

The referee awarded the penalty and then refused to reverse it even after consulting the footage, but some Liverpool fans on Twitter believe that Kavanagh walked away from the pitch-side monitor before even seeing the incident for a second time.

Here’s what some Reds supporters are saying on social media:

It did certainly look like Kavanagh left the monitor before seeing the relevant footage again.

Everton were by far the better side over the course of the 90 minutes, but there was still at least a point on offer for Liverpool without that penalty and with their injury crisis, it does seem that everything is going against Klopp’s outfit right now.
