Jack Wilshere has blasted the ‘absolutely disgusting’ abuse Steve Bruce has had to receive during his time as Newcastle United boss, as he posted on his Instagram story.

The free-agent. who is currently training with Arsenal, was reacting to comments from Bruce following his departure from Newcastle on Wednesday morning.

To the surprise of nobody, Bruce was sacked by the newly-owned and Saudi-led club, after taking charge of his 1000th game in management on Sunday, which ended in defeat to Tottenham.

But Bruce told the Telegraph that he was ‘never really wanted’ by the Newcastle faithful and how he was labelled ‘inept’ and a ‘cabbage head’ for the job he was doing in the North East.

He said: “To never really be wanted, to feel that people wanted me to fail, to read people constantly saying I would fail, that I was useless, a fat waste of space, a tactically inept cabbage head or whatever. From day 1.”

Wilshere took to his Instagram story to slam what has come Bruce’s way, as he labelled him a ‘top, top manager’, this is what he had to say.

“Absolutely disgusting the way this has been treated,” said Wilshere. “Yes, he may have had some bad results. But he is a human being with family and kids.

“In my era, where we are encouraging people to talk about mental health, this is unacceptable.

“This man still has a lot to give in the game but doesn’t want to because of abuse? How can that be right? Top, top manager who deserves respect.”

It’s no surprise that Bruce is out of the door, but one thing is for sure, all of this could have been dealt with in a better manner.

Ever since Bruce took charge of the Magpies, he never saw eye-to-eye with their fans and was always fighting a losing battle.

So, it was always doomed to fail, and after a long time waiting, when the new ownership did come to town, everyone was expecting the inevitable to happen, which was Bruce to be handed his P45.

But where the issue lies is that everyone saw it coming, so why didn’t the ownership just sack him straightaway rather than wait for him to take charge on Sunday?

The build-up to that game was frosty and the mood towards the end of the game just reeked of a man that was no longer wanted and everyone knew it.
