Graham Roberts has labelled Pau Torres an ‘absolutely brilliant player’ amid speculation that Tottenham Hotspur are going after the Spaniard.
Spurs have already signed one major centre-back in the form of Cristian Romero this summer, with the Argentine joining from Atalanta in Italy.
But Torres is arguably a bigger fish with a higher profile within the game – and The Times have reported that Tottenham are keen on the £55 million Villarreal powerhouse.
No doubt that fans of the North Londoners will get excited about this one.
And former Tottenham man Roberts certainly is, evident by how he has reacted on Twitter:
Best pairing in the Premier League?
Roberts is prone to a little bit of hyperbole and pro-Tottenham sentiment, it must be noted.
And although Torres is a fantastic central defender, much like Romero, it’s very early and unfounded to say that those two would give Spurs the best centre-half pairing in the whole Premier League.
The truth is that neither Romero or Torres have ever kicked a ball in English football and bigger defenders than those two have struggled after arriving.
Nobody is saying that they couldn’t absolutely transform the Lilywhites but, remember, some huge club will also have a fine defensive axis this season.
There is Harry Maguire and Rafael Varane, and Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk just to start. And although Varane and Konate have never played in England before either, they would be partnered by veterans of this division, which isn’t true for Romero or Torres.
