Some Liverpool fans on social media have been reacting to ex-Premier League referee Peter Walton’s comments about Harry Kane’s challenge on Andy Robertson this weekend.
What’s Walton said?
Walton spoke to The Times about the controversial decision this weekend, and he agreed with Paul Tierney’s view that it wasn’t a red-card offence.
Indeed, he says that because Robertson’s foot wasn’t planted, this challenge didn’t constitute serious foul play.
However, perhaps the more interesting part of his comments were about how Kane’s reputation may have affected the referee’s judgement.
“Referees do study players and formations ahead of a game. They are aware that certain players need to be dealt with proactively. Kane does not fall into this category. It has been more than 10 years since his last red card — for Leyton Orient away to Huddersfield Town in League One,” Walton said.
As you can imagine, Liverpool fans weren’t pleased with this explanation.
Not fair
This really isn’t a fair way to referee.
Yes, Kane hasn’t been sent off for a decade, and he should be commended for that, but that doesn’t mean he should be exempt from punishment.
His foul on Robertson was very dangerous at the weekend, and he probably should have received a red card.
However, due to the fact Robertson managed to not have his leg broken and the fact that Kane has a squeaky-clean track record, he avoided this sanction and that will have affected the result of this match.
Fan reaction
Understandably, Liverpool fans were fuming with this explanation, and they took to social media to make their voices heard…
