Rangers manager Steven Gerrard watched new signing Fashion Sakala score his first Ibrox goal in the 2-1 win over Real Madrid yesterday at Ibrox and was left full of praise of the Zambian international.

Sakala was making his Ibrox debut against Los Blancos when he scored the equaliser before Cedric Itten’s 76th-minute strike sealed the win for the hosts.

Gerrard admitted that there is “still loads to come” from Sakala after he impressed fans on his Ibrox debut – with the Ibrox boss hailing the 24-year-old’s exemplary attitude as he settles in Scotland.

“We still need to help him and polish the diamond,” Gerrard told Rangers TV.

“There’s still loads to come in terms of fitness, in terms of getting him up to speed, in terms of the information we are giving him.

“But one thing I will say is that he’s come in with an incredible attitude.

“He’s been an absolute role model to everyone where he’s come from in terms of his country.

“He’s come here with energy, he’s been bright, wanting to learn and pick up every bit of information. He’s smiling, he’s enjoying it and he’s grateful to be here.

“He’s been an absolute pleasure to work with but there’s loads more to come. You can see he’s exciting.”

Sakala’s start has immediately excited Rangers fans

Fans were already excited to see Sakala get started based on what they’d seen of him at KV Oostende but his impressive start at Ibrox has fans purring.

With uncertainty surrounding Alfredo Morelos’ future, the Zambian could be a ready-made replacement for El Bufalo.

As Rangers prepare for this weekend’s League opener against Livingston, Gerrard and the Rangers support will be hoping Sakala can impress when the competitive action gets started.
