Gary Neville has reacted on Twitter to the breaking news regarding the European Super League and the punishments for the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool.
The Times have claimed that the so-called ‘big six’ – Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have all agreed on a combined £20 million for trying to enter the now-disgraced ESL.
It is said that if the six English clubs try such a move again then they will be ‘deducted 30 points’ in the future.
When Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool – and the rest – informed their supporters that they will be taking part in a European Super League, it was met with anger.
Sky Sports pundit Neville and Jamie Carragher were pretty vocal about the whole thing, as were current players and managers.
There was the fear that the owners or chairman of those clubs – from the Glazers to Daniel Levy at Tottenham were generally pushing forward with an idea that was going to ruin English football.
But following the reaction from supporters and the media in the UK, it wasn’t long until every club was releasing a statement saying that they are opting out of the now failed league.
And fast forward today, and those sitting in their suits are now paying the price for their actions, but many will feel it’s not enough.
If this trick can be pulled once, it will be pulled again even if it’s in a different or more promising form.
The simple solution is to first of all put in rules or laws that stop such situations from occurring and then independent bodies regulating everything that goes on in the game.
