Sunderland should jump at the chance to sign Rangers loanee Jordan Jones for £600,000 in the summer transfer window, former Black Cats striker Stephen Elliott has told the Sunderland Echo.
It speaks volumes of the attacking quality at Steven Gerrard’s disposal that a player with such outrageous technical ability couldn’t buy a start at Ibrox in the first half of 2020/21.
Since moving south of the border in January, Northern Ireland international Jones has ripped League One defences apart like wet tissue paper, his mind-bending skill and eye for the spectacular immediately earning him cult hero status on Wearside.
The Redcar-born winger has produced four assists in 11 League One games already while scoring brilliant individual goals against Portsmouth and Crewe Alexandra.
And Elliott believes that, at a rumoured £600,000, Jones would be a bargain for a Sunderland side who, if all goes to plan, will be playing Championship football again next season.
“Personally, if the £600,000 price tag being mentioned for Jones is correct, I feel it would be an absolute coup,” said Elliott, who made more than 80 league appearances for the Black Cats between 2004 and 2007.
“When the crowds do finally return, Jordan is the type of player who will really excite the fans. He’s quick, he’s direct, he can score goals and, most importantly, he seems to have a real desire to do well and succeed.
“I also think he will thrive even more when the supporters return. He just seems that type of character.
“So if the ‘powers that be’ are reading this, I would strongly advise to get a deal done as soon as possible.”
With TEAMtalk reporting a host of Championship clubs, including Cardiff, Stoke City and Barnsley, are also interested, Sunderland’s hopes of retaining Jones’ services may rest solely on whether they can secure promotion at the third time of asking.
Middlesbrough are also interested in re-signing a player who started his professional career at Riverside.
