Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter in confusion after The Chronicle revealed why Cedwyn Scott wasn’t handed a contract following an impressive trial.

The Chronicle reveal that, while the 22-year-old made a good impression, his age has counted against him. The Magpies feel that the timeframe for him to make the jump into first-team football would be too difficult.

That just begs the question: why offer him a trial in the first place?

Surely, Newcastle knew how old Scott was before handing him an audition.

The centre-forward – who was compared to Leicester hitman Jamie Vardy in the Sunderland Echo – caught Newcastle’s eye after scoring 14 goals in just four games for Hebburn Town.

If he had been signed, Scott would’ve joined the likes of Florent Indalecio, Bradley Cross and Rodrigo Vilca in the development ranks, all of who have been signed recently.

It is clear that the Magpies are having somewhat of a recruitment drive at youth level, although despite his best efforts, Scott will not be joining the aforementioned trio because of his age.

Let’s see what they’ve been saying about the situation…
