Stephen Warnock has praised Tottenham’s ‘very good’ Oliver Skipp and compared him to West Ham’s Declan Rice, as he told the Football Show on Sky.
The former left-back stated that Skipp, like Rice, is showcasing ‘the ability to drive with the ball’ and push Spurs further up the pitch from the middle of the park.
Skipp was on-loan at Norwich last season and he helped them earn promotion to the Premier League by winning the Championship outright.
The 21-year-old faced his former side over the weekend and was one of the standout performers during what was a comfortable 3-0 win.
Warnock touched upon how impressive Skipp was during that game and how he is making Spurs play quicker in the middle of the park.
“He’s a good player,” said Warnock. “A very good player. He has all the attributes. He had that loan spell at Norwich, which Tottenham were delighted with because of the way he developed.
“We talk about Declan Rice and his ability to drive with the ball. When Skipp gets the ball in this position (deep in his own half), the simple thing to do is, either pass it out wide or try and slip a ball through to Moura.
“So what is the next best thing to do? Bypass (Norwich’s) press and midfield. Then it’ll open up. And he has got that turn of pace. He has got that ability to drive with the ball.
“I thought he had a very good game. He doesn’t complicate things – they are moving the ball a lot slicker now and he is a part of that.”
It seems a very long time ago now, but Skipp was used on occasions by Mauricio Pochettino in the Premier League and the Champions League when he was a teenager.
Some would probably feel that he is older than, 21, given how long he has been about.
But he is still very young and he will be hoping this is the season that he plays regularly for his boyhood club.
Skipp only needs to look at someone like Harry Kane and how he can become a key member of the senior side going forward and an important figure for the team.
