Newcastle United goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has told the Evening Express that he still sees his future at St. James’ Park despite joining Scottish outfit Aberdeen on loan in January.

The 20-year-old was brought to Pittodrie late in the January transfer window after goalkeeper Joe Lewis suffered a serious injury to his leg, which is expect to rule him out for around three months.

Woodman has since started in place of Lewis, forcing back-up goalkeeper Danny Rogers to remain on the fringes at the Dons. He has made four appearances, keeping one clean sheet and conceding six goals.

But Woodman does not believe he will remain at Aberdeen beyond his loan spell, with the England Under-20 World Cup winner looking to use the experience to help boost his chances of claiming first-team game time at Newcastle.

“I’ve been trying to push to play for quite a long time and I’m quite an impatient person,” Woodman said.

“I want to play football matches because that’s when I’m at my happiest. Hopefully if I can do well here and go back to Newcastle, I’ll see what’s in store for me there.

“I’m always pushing myself and always pushing the management team to start and play games because that’s when I’m happy.”

Woodman finally made his Newcastle debut just weeks before moving to Aberdeen, starting in goal in the 3-1 win over Luton in the third round of the FA Cup in January.

He has a contract at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2020 but it depends if he will be afforded any more game time with the Toon boasting an array of goalkeepers. Rob Elliot and Karl Darlow are still on the books, while Martin Dubravka could earn a permanent move at the end of his loan.

Woodman is expected to start against Steve Clarke’s in-form Kilmarnock side on Saturday afternoon, as the two sides go head to head in the Scottish Cup.
