Steven Gerrard’s Rangers reportedly want to sign Birmingham City’s Greg Stewart, who has shone at Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes has confirmed that he wants to sign loanee Greg Stewart on a permanent basis this summer amid reports linking Rangers with a move for the in-form attacker, as reported by the Press and Journal.

Stewart has enjoyed a fine season in Scotland, scoring nine goals and grabbing another nine assists during loan spells at Kilmarnock and Aberdeen after falling down the pecking order at parent club Birmingham City.

And with the 29-year-old’s contract due to expire in July, the Daily Record claims that Rangers are hoping to snap up the versatile forward with manager Steven Gerrard a big fan.

Though Rangers will face competition from Aberdeen, who are keen to keep Stewart at Pittodrie.

“When we signed Greg in January we were keen to do a permanent deal. But the agent and Greg were keen to do it as a loan, so Greg could look at his options in the summer,” said McInnes.

“He’s a good player and I’m sure he will have plenty of options. I would (sign him) if given encouragement, yes.”

Rangers have Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and Kyle Lafferty at their disposal already with Zak Rudden set to return to Ibrox after an excellent loan spell in the Championship with Falkirk.

But former Dundee star Stewart would give Rangers something different, a number 10 with the ability to play between the lines.
