Aberdeen took on Hibernian at the weekend in a clash between two sides that would-be-king. The Dons came up short with a poor performance against the Edinburgh side, who claimed a 2-0 win at Dens Park.

It could have been much worse, were it not for Newcastle United’s young stopper Freddie Woodman.

The 20-year-old, who won the Under-20 World Cup with England in the summer, was in fine form throughout the game and his manager Derek McInnes has come out to admit that it could have been more, telling the Aberdeen Evening Express:

“Although we lost 2-0 we were lucky to get away with two.”

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

It is the second time since the game that Woodman’s performance has been hailed, with midfielder Kenny McLean doing similar earlier in the week.

Aberdeen lost Joe Lewis to injury in January and that necessitated a move for the Newcastle man but many fans at St James’ Park were hoping to see the youngster in first-team action on Tyneside this season.

To hear he is performing well will no doubt please Newcastle fans, but will also have them fretful he will be picked up by someone else in the summer.

Sooner or later Newcastle will have to pull the trigger with their brilliant young goalkeeper. Otherwise, he will simply head elsewhere.
