Newcastle United star Mehdi Abeid says he never doubted his ability to play for the club.

Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid has told the Northern Echo that he never lost the confidence that he could play for the club.

The Echo claims that his future at St James’ Park was in doubt last summer after he returned from a loan spell in Greece having played for Panathinaikos.

“I never lost the confidence I could play for Newcastle. But I didn’t know what was going to happen with the club,” said Abeid.

“I feel much better after my loan in Greece. I feel more confident, and this is just the benefit.”

Abeid would have impressed manager John Carver in the respect that he gets his head down and works extremely hard.

There are better Newcastle players in terms of their technique and the raw potential they have, but Abeid plays sensible football and always tries to be effective in terms of short passes and linking various areas of the team.

His comments are also an example to any Newcastle players on loan that despite the doubt, work hard and they’ll get a chance to perform in front of Newcastle’s passionate crowd.

He could have taken the easy option and left the club, but is still a Newcastle player and has fought his way into the first team with regular chances to prove his quality and consistency.

Hopefully, Abeid can play a key role in the side over the rest of the season as they push for an important place in the top eight and a slim possibility of European football for next season.
