Abdoulaye Doucoure should pick Tottenham move over Arsenal or Liverpool

Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure is reportedly wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

The January transfer window may have closed last week, but that hasn’t stopped speculation surrounding Tottenham Hotspur and their plans for the summer transfer window.

Mauricio Pochettino managed to bring in Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-German in January, and the latest rumours suggest that a new midfielder will be on his radar for the summer.

The Daily Mail claim that Pochettino watched Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure in action against Chelsea on Monday night, and he was so impressed that a summer bid could be in the pipeline.

However, the same report notes that Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen on Doucoure, meaning a three-way battle for the Frenchman’s signature could take place this summer – but Doucoure would be wise to pick Spurs.

Doucoure, who has hit seven goals from midfield this season, would be lined up as a successor to Mousa Dembele, and his role in the Spurs side – offering drive forward from midfield whilst also breaking up play – is crucial under Pochettino, suggesting Doucoure would have a key role to play.

Watford’s proximity to Tottenham doesn’t exactly give them an upper hand over Arsenal, but the chance to develop under a manager who prioritises attributes over big names should be appealing to Doucoure, whilst playing in the Champions League would also be appealing.

Liverpool have Naby Keita arriving over the summer, whilst Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner can also play in midfield, meaning Doucoure would risk being lost in the shuffle if he headed to Anfield.

Working under Arsene Wenger at Arsenal may be a draw for Doucoure, but with questions over his future at the Emirates Stadium and the presence of players such as Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey, Mohamed Elneny and Jack Wilshere, Tottenham appear to be the safest bet – though they will have to cough up in order to tempt Watford into a deal this summer.
