The West Ham defender has adapted well to his new position.
David Moyes is looking for ways to get the best out of his West Ham United side and Aaron Cresswell is one player who is certainly benefiting from the new manager’s methods.
Cresswell has regularly been deployed as an attack-minded left-back for West Ham but for the last two games – the narrow defeat to Manchester City and the victory over Chelsea – the 27-year-old has filled in on the left side of a back three.
The decision to deploy Cresswell in such a position was initially rather surprising given his unfamiliarity with that role but he has adapted rather quickly and was especially impressive as West Ham managed to keep a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Chelsea.
Cresswell is used to making well-timed interceptions, but he has to perform that task with considerably more regularity as a centre-back.
So far, though, he has fared well, while he has still managed to provide something of an attacking threat when the opportunity has allowed, with Pedro Obiang dropping in to provide cover at centre-back in such scenarios.
Playing Cresswell as a centre-back also allows Moyes to fit Arthur Masuaku into the team, with the latter having produced an encouraging display against Chelsea.
It seems likely that Moyes will stick with the same approach against Arsenal on Wednesday and Cresswell with be looking for a repeat performance.
