Gus Poyet is linked with the Rangers job.

Manager Gustavo Poyet of Sunderland looks on during the Barclays Premier League match between Sunderland and Aston Villa at Stadium of Light on March 14, 2015 in Sunderland, England.

Gus Poyet is not the only member of his family to have been linked with Rangers over the past year.

This week Poyet threw his name into the ring for the Rangers job, with The Star reporting he is keen on replacing Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox.

Poyet is available for work after leaving his role at Shanghai Shenhua in September.

If Poyet did get the job, his son Diego would certainly take an interest after being linked with the club last November.

The Scottish Sun reported Diego Poyet was being considered by Mark Warburton as a replacement for Joey Barton.

Diego Poyet was a free agent at the time after being released from his contract by West Ham.

He had previously been at Charlton, and spent time on loan at Huddersfield and MK Dons.

Poyet’s proposed move to Rangers fell through, and he signed a short term deal in Argentina with Godoy Cruz.

This summer the midfielder returned to Europe, where he is playing in Cyprus for Pafos where he has featured eight times this season.

He has not done enough to suggest Rangers missed out, and father Gus Poyet’s managerial record has been sketchy too lately.

After his exit from Sunderland, he has had short terms spells in Greece with AEK Athens, in Spain with Real Betis, and in China.

It appears likely Rangers will not bite on his desire to get the gig at Ibrox, and look elsewhere, as they did a year ago in regard to his son.
