Brendan Rodgers has reacted to Steven Gerrard quittitng Rangers, having experienced a similar situation after leaving Celtic.
Gerrard called time on his three-and-a-half-year spell as Rangers boss last week to join Aston Villa.
Rodgers knows a thing or two about leaving a high-performing Scottish side for the Premier League, having quit Celtic for Leicester City in 2019.
And the 48-year-old admitted via The Record that he can empathise with Gerrard – who led the Ibrox side to a first Premiership title in a decade last season – for wanting a fresh challenge.
He said: “It’s always a wrench when you leave, and I can only talk from my own experience at Celtic in terms of winning trophies.
“Then you look for the next challenge. He’s felt that.
“It’s a league he knows very well and he goes into a fantastic club that will have ambitions to chase European football. I’m sure he’ll do really well”
Vindication
Gerrard kicks off his Aston Villa career with a clash against Brighton on Saturday.
The 41-year-old was unveiled to the media today for his first press conference.
Rodgers has proven vindicated in leaving Celtic for the Foxes, having led City to an FA Cup last term as well as back-to-back fifth-placed finishes in the Premier League.
Under the Irishman, they’re knocking on the door for Champions League qualification.
The former Rangers boss won’t be looking ahead to trying to crack the top four just yet, but long term he’ll very confident in proving a successful appointment in the Premier League.
